08/08/08

The day began with Kheng Yew, Steph Khoo and Yen June singing the Olympic song.

At first, none of us knew what they were singing, nor why they were singing a Chinese song in a school which so strictly bans Chinese.

Eventually we figured it out. 08/08/08. Of course! It's the opening of the Beijing Olympics today!

I'll skip ahead to the lunch hour of this very auspicious day. When I got down for lunch, there was a very tall guy. Very very tall guy. Very very tall Australian guy.

Taking a moment to describe our awe at his height...

We were all waiting eagerly for the man to stand up. He was taking his sweet time, sitting down talking to Mr Ganesh.

Eventually, he did stand up. And when he did, we squinted to see his face. Nah, just kidding.

The whole canteen was excited with the tall man walking around. My group, especially, was quite excited with the man who was almost twice our heights.

"We should ask him to do a slam dunk later! I'm sure he can!"

"Nah, I tell you what. We get Tzer Chyuan to challenge him to a basketball match. When Tzer Chyuan shoots, Tall Guy will reach up and cover the hoop with his hand!"

"Yeah! Then Tall Guy will take the ball, and without having to move his feet, stretch across the whole court and easily put the ball through the other hoop."

"Then he would pick up Tzer Chyuan and put him through the hoop, too. Upside down. With legs flailing in the air."

"Only problem is that, unless he can stretch all the way to touch his toes, he won't be able to reach down to Tzer Chyuan."

"He can la. His bones must be flexible, like the coconut tree's trunk, so that when the wind blows, he can remain upright."

"And he must have alot of experience bending down. Did you see him in the bathroom? He had to crouch the whole time."

"You know, we could put Faridah Salleh on Robiah's shoulders and she still wouldn't be able to touch his chin."

Etc,etc. This kind of talk went on all the way until the bell rang and we went to line up.

After assembly, Dylan, Jeremy, Li Vern, Jin Yi and I went to attend the Tall Guy's talk on Queensland University, Australia.

The talk was uneventful, and more boring than most of the other Career talks I've attended this year. So we'll skip that, too. We now fast-forward to the moment in time when we go to the performing arts lecture.

We got to 5C early. There were several of the cast of Romeo and Juliet there, like Gregory, Yohann and Jasjeet.

This was by far the best field we could have chosen. He made us try some performing.

He first asked Jasjeet to tell the class what he had been doing before he came in to the talk.
Jasjeet was in the office with Madam Matthews and Goh for incomplete work.

That would be our storyline. He called several of the people in the class to take part in the play.

First, the director was chosen. Who else but John Tay?

Then there was to be a producer. Gregory Sze.

The cast: Lyanna (as Jasjeet), Jasjeet (as Kimberly), Timothy Tai (as Matthews), and... erm... some guy(as Goh).

Lighting people: Yohann and Sandra.

Sound effects people: Joanna and... some girl.

Set/Props: Jeremy and I.

There were also some girls to help with crowd control and all.

The audience was sent out of the class for 5 minutes while we prepared. 5 minutes was not much time to prepare, so we rushed it.

After 5 minutes, the ushers usher the audience in.

The play begins.

The room is dark. The audience find their seats, and it starts.

The lights in front are switched on, focusing on 'Jasjeet' conducting titration in the science lab.

The sound effects people are making drippy noises.

'Kimberly' enters the room.

"Jasjeet! Madam Matthews wants to see you."

Jasjeet drops the test tubes, sound effects go "PING!".

Lights turn off.

Lights come back on, the scene is at the office. 'Madam Goh' stands by the entrance, holding her usual pile of books in her crossed arms.

"Jasjeet, please come inside."(in her nasally voice)

They enter Matthew's office. 'Matthews' sits at the table.

"Jasjeet, Jasjeet. I've been hearing complaints about you. Your teachers are not very happy with your work. Is that correct?"

Jasjeet mummers incomprehensibly.

"Ms Teng, especially, is displeased with your work. Why is it that you have not completed SEVEN exercises of her work? Do you think that that is the right attitude?"

"You know, Jasjeet. If you continue with this behaviour, I will have to ask you to leave. Everyday, I have to talk to parents who are begging me to let their children into the school. You know why?"

Jasjeet rolls his eyes.

"They tell me that this school is the best, the students are all so well behaved. Wesleyans are role-models. Do you think that your attitude is suitable for this school? Is your attitude that of a true Wesleyan?"

Jasjeet stands, military style, hands behind his back and eyes down.

"No, madam. I'm sorry, madam."

"I want you to go and complete all of your work, and change your attitude. Now you may go."

Jasjeet walks away, cursing Matthews silently.

Matthews turns to Goh, sighs and says:

"Incorrigible."

Actually, Timothy Tai's acting as Matthews was da bomb. I cannot describe it as well as he acted it, obviously. His impromptu quotations of Matthews and her stereotypical lectures are one of the priceless moments of hilarious school life I can't forget. Brilliant, Matthews. Brilliant.

Jun Shern out.
